I assume that you have built your project and just need to launch it, but you don't have any AVDs created and have to use command line for all the actions. You have to do the following. • Create a new virtual device (AVD) for the platform you need. If you have to use command line for creating your AVD, you can call android create avd -n -t where targetID is the API level you need. If you can use GUI, just type in android avd and it will launch the manager, where you can do the same. You can read more about. • Run the AVD either by using command emulator -avd or through previously launched GUI. Wait until the emulator fully loads, it takes some time. You can read about. • Now you have to install the application to your AVD. Usually during development you just use the same Ant script you used to build the project, just select install target. However, you can install the application manually using command adb install. • Now switch to emulator and launch your application like on any normal device, through the launcher. Android Studio Emulator. Step 1: Set up Android Studio's tools. Install Android Studio 3.0+. Go to Preferences -> Appearance & Behavior -> System Settings -> Android SDK. Step 2: Set up a virtual device. In Android Studio, go to Tools -> Android -> AVD Manager. Press the '+ Create Virtual Device' button. Or, as an alternative, you can use the following command: adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n /. For example: adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n org.sample.helloworld/org.sample.helloworld.HelloWorld. As a commenter suggested, you can also replace org.sample.helloworld.HelloWorld in the line above with just.HelloWorld, and it will work too. If you have Git Bash you can open your emulator with a double-click, with some initial setup (tested in Windows 10 only): • Open Git Bash. • Run cd ~/AppData/Local/Android/sdk/emulator • Run./emulator -list-avds and keep note of the emulator's name. ![]() ![]() MY_EMULATOR for example. • Open Notepad and add these two lines (insert your emulator's name instead of MY_EMULATOR): cd ~/AppData/Local/Android/sdk/emulator./emulator -avd MY_EMULATOR • Save the file somewhere convinient as myfile. You can change 'myfile' as suits you best, but the extension.sh is needed. • Open Git Bash at the directory where you stored myfile.sh and run chmod +x myfile.sh. Remember to put your file's name instead of myfile. And that's it! From now on, everytime you need to start that emulator, just locate your myfile.sh and double click on it and wait for your Android emulator to launch! Managing Virtual Devices with the Android Device Manager • • 14 minutes to read • Contributors • • • In this article This article explains how to use the Android Device Manager to create and configure Android Virtual Devices (AVDs) that emulate physical Android devices. You can use these virtual devices to run and test your app without having to rely on a physical device. After you have verified that hardware acceleration is enabled (as described in ), the next step is to use the Android Device Manager (also referred to as the Xamarin Android Device Manager) to create virtual devices that you can use to test and debug your app. Android Device Manager on Windows This article explains how to use the Android Device Manager to create, duplicate, customize, and launch Android virtual devices. You use the Android Device Manager to create and configure Android Virtual Devices (AVDs) that run in the. Each AVD is an emulator configuration that simulates a physical Android device. This makes it possible to run and test your app in a variety of configurations that simulate different physical Android devices. Requirements To use the Android Device Manager, you will need the following items: • Visual Studio 2017 version 15.8 or later is required. Visual Studio Community, Professional, and Enterprise editions are supported. • Visual Studio Tools for Xamarin version 4.9 or later. • The Android SDK must be installed (see ). Be sure to install the Android SDK at its default location if it is not already installed: C: Program Files (x86) Android android-sdk. • The following packages must be installed (via the ): • Android SDK Tools version 26.1.1 or later • Android SDK Platform-Tools 27.0.1 or later • Android SDK Build-Tools 27.0.3 or later • Android Emulator 27.2.7 or later. These packages should be displayed with Installed status as seen in the following screenshot: Launching the Device Manager Launch the Android Device Manager from the Tools menu by clicking Tools > Android > Android Device Manager: If the following error dialog is presented on launch, see the section for workaround instructions: Main Screen When you first launch the Android Device Manager, it presents a screen that displays all currently-configured virtual devices. For each virtual device, the Name, OS (Android Version), Processor, Memory size, and screen Resolution are displayed: When you select a device in the list, the Start button appears on the right. You can click the Start button to launch the emulator with this virtual device: After the emulator starts with the selected virtual device, the Start button changes to a Stop button that you can use to halt the emulator: New Device To create a new device, click the New button (located in the upper right-hand area of the screen): Clicking New launches the New Device screen: To configure a new device in the New Device screen, use the following steps: • Give the device a new name. In the following example, the new device is named Pixel_API_27: • Select a physical device to emulate by clicking the Base Device pull-down menu: • Select a processor type for this virtual device by clicking the Processor pull-down menu.

This Samsung portable SSD is smaller than a standard business card for easy. I've been using this as a backup for my Mac and it does a good job, but it isn't. ![]() Jump straight to the section you want with these quick links: - - - If you're looking for the best external hard drive for your Mac or PC, then you've come to the right place. In this list, we've collected the top external drives that can easily expand your storage, and our price comparison tool can ensure you get the very best prices as well. Buying the best external hard drive for your needs is an important process for digital creatives, as it doesn't take long for creative files to start filling up the internal hard drive of your machine. You need to make sure you pick something that will reliably store your important files, while also offering plenty of space, speed and value for money. This means there are a number of considerations to make before pulling out your wallet. First, a quick recap of the basics. An external hard drive or SSD (which stands for Solid State Drive) is a device that can be easily plugged into your machine, giving you almost-instant storage space, without having to prise open your computer and make complicated upgrades. • Jump to: Not only does an HDD or SSD give you more capacity for large files, but because the devices are portable, they can be taken with you on the go and plugged into different machines – handy if you swap between PCs and Macs regularly. Also, in the event that something bad happens to your machine, your files will still be safe and accessible. Right now, we think the overall best external hard drive for Mac and PC is the Western Digital My Passport 4TB. It offers the best balance of speed, reliability, portability and price. But there are many options out there – scroll down to see our full list of recommendations, and the best external hard drive prices too. Storage considerations There are a number of things to consider when looking for an external hard drive or SSD for your Mac or PC. First, is storage. You'll want to make sure you buy an external storage device that has enough capacity for your needs – without paying for high capacities you'll never use. Around 500GB is a good sweet-spot for external storage, though you can buy smaller capacities, as well as larger ones at 1TB or greater. Hard drive vs SSD: which is best? Another consideration is whether to get an external storage device that uses a traditional hard drive, or one with an SSD. Usually, external hard drives with traditional drives are more affordable and come in larger capacities. There are external SSDs that come with large capacities – but these can be expensive. SSDs are much faster than traditional hard drives, and because they don't have any mechanical or moving parts, they're generally more robust and smaller in physical size as well. So, if you want to store huge amounts of data while keeping prices low, an external hard drive is the way to go. But if speed is your top priority – for example, if you move a lot of large files, or want to run programs off the drive – then choose an SSD. The right connections The connection between the external hard drive and your Mac or PC is also important. The first generation rectangular USB-A ports are slowly being superseded by the newer, smaller reversible USB-C ports. These are now found on all modern PCs, and Macs. Some high end PC and Macs, such as the new iMac and, come with USB-C ports that support Thunderbolt 3. Music streaming service Deezer released a on Wednesday that offers high-definition lossless audio playback in the popular FLAC format. The app not only eliminates the hassle and additional step of opening up a new browser but desktop users with Premium+ account, who download the new app before January 2018, will be able to hear all their music in high-definition audio by selecting this option under sound settings.Support for 16-bit FLAC is available to Premium+ subscribers, who currently pay $9.99 for the luxury. However, users who want to stream in the lossless format after January 2018 will have to subscribe to Deezer HiFi, which costs twice that at $19.99. (Deezer's new pricing matches Tidal's HiFi lossless subscription tier.) The desktop Deezer app is currently still a beta, but it does include access to 43 million tracks as well as a working version of the Flow feature, which is similar to Apple Music's personalized playlists. Flow recommends songs based on previously played tracks, as well as video interviews and performances. Deezer subscribers can download the desktop app using. I had the misfortune of having to give up Tidal HiFi for Apple Music recently. Apple Music sounds crap. I would never voluntarily pay for Apple Music, I got it free for a year with my phone plan, probably because Apple wanted to get the numbers up. Other services are going to start offering higher than 16/44 CD quality soon if they haven’t already. Apple needs to lift their game. In a world where you can shoot 4K video on your phone and 8K televisions will soon be a thing it’s crazy that digital music retailers like Apple still haven’t matched a 30 year-old audio standard. This is just marketing crap. Hello, in the past I used to be able to startup my premium Deezer app without internet, but not recently. I often use my mac to listen to music offline, please advise. ![]() Nobody has ever been able to hear the difference between a 256kbps AAC audio file (like Apple Music is) and a 24bit WAV file. All the people that say they hear a difference didn't take a double blind test yet OR are so so afraid to show their test results online – I wonder why. I've taken a double blind test several times and was never able to reliably tell the difference. By the way: I'm an audio engineer whose ears should be trained to do that. And all people who say they can are LIARS. They do biased tests by switching back and forth with them knowing which file is what. Of course your brain will tell you that WAV sounds better. But as soon as you don't know which is which you'll fail. I believe you’re the one who is mistaken. You’re pushing tired old arguments that are increasingly being debunked with newer evidence to the contrary. In fact many of those studies you’re relying on were poorly described and relied upon listeners with no training or concern for high quality audio. The average joe where near enough is good enough. There’s a meta analysis of many studies which shows a positive identification at a statistically significant level for listeners who were trained to recognise high-res audio and knew what they were listening for (I’m a data analyst with a science degree so I know about stats). Furthermore, the analysis highlighted some studies that had fairly high rates of positive identification and in particular some individuals who have a much better ability than others. This could be due to many factors such as genetics, experience and lack of hearing damage. I’ll try to find it and post back. So just because you can’t tell doesn’t mean everyone else are LIARS. As for Apple’s lossy AAC, I suspect it was converted from 16/44 lossless CD, which itself was created from higher resolution sources, making it sound worse than it otherwise should. This is why Apple began marketing their “Maatered for iTunes” albums. They’re probably much better because greater care was taken during the mastering process and conversion to 256 kbps was done in one go from the master. I pity you if you can’t tell. Maybe you have damaged hearing or you just aren’t suited to your career. Unfortunately, many young people are damaging their hearing these days because of prolonged use of poor quality headphones of which which Apple’s bundled EarPods are amongst the worst. True their library is lacking compared with Apple’s but I still find plenty of what I like. The app itself is miles better than Apple’s Music, which pushes their own services and has an ugly, fat, white UI. Now, there is CD/DVD Label Maker for Mac. Eager to try out a new app, I downloaded it right away and started trying out the features. To call it a fantastically-designed timer app would be a huge understatement. Timerlist is best experienced rather than written about. Timerlist is extremely useful in a variety of things we do: workouts, cooking a recipe (or more than one recipe), yoga, taking a test, marathon/running. Alternatives to Gamebooster/Razer Cortex? - posted in All Other Applications: Okay so, Game Booster is a program that pretty much clears up some ram, ends processes (including some windows. But saying it that way makes it look like just another timer-app, right? That’s precisely what Timerlist is not. ![]() It’s one heck of a design, implementation and interface that can totally change the way you use a timer app. For any reason. Sponsored Links Timerlist is free so instead of reading this review, I suggest that you grab that app right away and start using it to feel why it’s so radically different and yet so intuitively useful. The app runs on gesture-based actions, much like Clear. Swiping left or right will start a timer, pause a timer or reset the timer completely. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Each timer has controls and features that go beyond the usual realm of a minimalist timer app. To explain how Timerlist is an interesting app, let’s talk about creating a timer for a walk+jog workout. You are going to walk for 1:30 and then jog for 1:00 (minute). And then repeat it. Sponsored Links In the Timerlist app, you create a timer within which we have all these sub-timers for walking and jogging. The whole interface is so simple that you can get started instantly. You can set two kinds of alerts for when the timer changes to another routine (walk → jog or vice versa): you can either have it Announce or Vibrate (or both). Then, you add timers (with adjustable timer value and rest). Along with that, you can also have a beats-per-minute setup and configure your favorite music (from the iTunes library) to play while the timer runs. Now all of this sounds very normal for a comprehensive timer app but it’s the UI/UX that gets you loving the app almost instantly. Once you get the hang of managing timers (just a swipe right) and creating new timers, you can start getting creative with the timer themselves. You can add music and beats for the jog part of the timer and then you can have the timer run normally for the walk part. Apple Display Calibration Utility Calibrating an LCD display in Mac OS X The following tutorial describes the process of calibrating an Apple LCD display using the Apple built-in Display Calibrator Assistant Utility. Before beginning the process of calibrating your LCD display and to make it easier for yourself I recommend that you use a mid grey desktop background. Feb 20, 2014 By far, the best way to calibrate your monitor, and keep it accurate by recalibrating it at regular intervals, is to acquire a good monitor-calibration tool. Are Mac/PC compatible, and detect changes in the ambient light viewing conditions for the most consistent results. Connect the screen-reading device (calibration colorimeter) to. Jul 19, 2017 - The three tools I tested are the Datacolor Spyder5, Colormunki Design and i1 Display Pro. After discussing the general use of each calibrating. You can change back to your favourite background image/color when the calibration process is completed. • From Mac OS X System Preferences panel open the Displays applet • Ensure you display is set to the Native resolution (LCD's should always be set to the native resolution otherwise images will appear soft) • Ensure Colors is set to Millions • Set the Brightness slider to your preferred value ( the Apple default is approximately 60%, although a slightly brighter level might be necessary on aging displays). ![]() Note: the screenshots used in this tutorial are based on the version of Display Calibrator Assistant that shipped with Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger), but they should still be valid for later versions. Figure 1 • Choose the Color tab • Search the list of Display Profiles for one that matches your display and select it. In truth this step shouldn't be required since the calibration utility automatically picks up the necessary data from the display via the DVI/ADC connector. • Press the Calibrate button. Figure 2 Note: if after calibrating your display you find that it appears to revert to the uncalibrated state then repeat the step outlined above but this time select the new calibration profile. Very often this problem arises after the computer wakes from sleep mode and is especially prevalent with the MacBook and MacBook Pro range. It's actually a bug in the Operating System that for one reason or another Apple seems unable or unwilling to fix. • Expert Mode should be selected so that all the available settings can be adjusted. Figure 3 Determine the Native Gamma of the Display The checklist down the left side of the Display Calibrator Assistant dialog is only a guide and not all steps will be applicable to all display types. The following screenshot shows the first of five steps used to determine the native gamma of the display. This arrangement is an improvement on the old scheme used by Apple and was developed because they recognised the difficulty many users had in adjusting the blue channel gamma. In each step you will be adjusting the Brightness and Tint thus obtaining much finer control of the gamma curves. • Begin by adjusting the Brightness slider ( 1) vertically so that the apple symbol blends with the background. • Next using the Tint slider ( 2) trim out any color imbalance that may be present. You may need to readjust the left hand brightness slider a little more after this step. • It 's helpful to squint when trying to blend the inner and outer shapes. Step 1 - Native Gamma - Brightness and Tint Adjustment The remaining four steps are basically a repeat of the first but effect other parts of the gamma curve. ![]() You should follow the instructions given by Apple in the dialogs. Step 2 - Fine-tuning the Mid-tone Response Step 3 - Fine-tuning the 3/4-tone Response Setting the Target Gamma Once the native gamma has been determined it only remains for you to decide on your preferred target Gamma. For many years the standard gamma setting for Macs was 1.8. Compared to gamma 2.2 a setting of 1.8 will appear quite bright. In other words gamma 2.2 will appear darker and more contrasty than what many long time Mac users are used to. If you don't have a need (or love affair) with gamma 1.8 I recommend that you choose gamma 2.2. The majority of displays (CRT and LCD) will have a Native gamma somewhere between 2.0 and 2.2 so choosing a lesser value requires a fair amount of adjustment on the part of the graphics card LUT, and will tend to cause banding or posterisation. Figure 4 - Setting the Target Gamma Choosing the White Point High-end LCD's such as those from Apple tend to be factory set to a value of around 6500 oK (i.e. Their Native White Point is 6500 oK) and so it only remains for the user to check the box labeled Use native white point. Office 2016 is now available as a perpetual/retail license, volume licensing and to. As of 12th May 2016 with update 15.22.0 or later Outlook supported Arabic. NOTE: You can buy Office 2016 as perpetual licensed / boxed editions but. Aug 29, 2018 - Office 2019 for Windows or Mac are separate versions of Office for anyone who buys the perpetual license. Perpetual License is what Microsoft calls paying once for the ongoing use of Microsoft Office. Compared to the 'subscription' or annual payment model that Microsoft prefers and has been pushing customers towards. ![]() Microsoft today launched Office 2016 for Windows, and simultaneously raised prices of the stand-alone licenses for both it and the Mac edition between 5% and 7%. Subscription prices -- the 'rent-not-own' model that Microsoft's been aggressively pushing since early 2013 -- did not change. The cost of a single-license Office Home & Student 2016 edition climbed $10, from $140 to $150, a 7.1% increase. Meanwhile, Office Home & Business 2016 -- which adds Microsoft's Outlook email client to the suite -- also rose $10, from $220 to $230, or 4.5%. [ Related: ] Office Professional 2016, available only for Windows, retained its $400 price tag. The single-license, stand-alone editions are sold primarily at retail, and are dubbed 'perpetual' licenses because they require a one-time payment, but can then be used as long as the user wants. That's in contrast to Office 365, which requires a monthly or annual fee to continue using the software. On the consumer side, customers can choose between Office 365 Personal ($70 annually, $7 monthly) and Office 365 Home ($100 per year, $10 each month), while businesses have options that range from $99 to $240 per user per year. Office 365 Home is notable because it allows up to five installations of on PCs or Macs in the same household. All Office 365 plans, both consumer- and business-grade, also include rights to run the Office apps designed for, iOS and touch-centric mobile devices, including Android smartphones and tablets, and, and Windows 10 touch-enabled tablets and notebooks. [ ] Microsoft's price increase for Office 2016 perpetual licenses was the second since January 2013, when the company revamped its retail line-up and boosted prices by as much as 17%. -- and eliminated multi-license packages -- also in early 2013, even though the suite itself had not changed. Although the Redmond, Wash. Company did not offer a reason for the price increases -- or for that matter, even mention them in its -- they were clearly driven by a desire to put Office 365 subscriptions in a better light. The higher prices of Office 2016 Home & Student and Office 2016 Home & Business make Office 365 slightly more compelling. A household with three PCs or Macs, for instance, that plans on sticking with perpetual licenses for three years and wants Outlook, spends just $100 per user with Office 365 Home over that span, but $230 per user with Office Home & Business 2016. The latter is up from $220 per user under the prior pricing. In other words, a family with three copies of Office in use would have to hold onto perpetual licenses for seven years before getting more value than subscribing to Office 365 Home over the same period. But even the perpetual license price increases did not make Office 365 Personal -- the single PC or Mac subscription plan -- more economical once its extras, including 1TB of OneDrive storage space, were eliminated. ![]() Apple Footer • This site contains user submitted content, comments and opinions and is for informational purposes only.
